Shark Fishing Issues
By now, we’ve all seen the Instagram images and video being circulated all over the platform.
It’s obvious that what these individuals are doing is disgusting, depraved, and morally and ethically wrong. With that said, this specific shark murdering individual is part of a larger problem. There have been way TOO MANY instances of videos and images like these, sometimes worse. However, is any of this illegal? The short, and ridiculously frustrating answer is NO. What these morally bankrupt individuals do is totally fine, so long as it’s done in federal waters. We do want to point out, however, that not all anglers behave so immaturely and crudely. There are tons of instances of shark fisher people helping shark research and conservation - but this is a topic for another blog post.
Back to the laws… whether an act is legal basically depends on what type of shark is caught, where, with what, and if and when it is released. We know, annoying. We know that the shark(s) that this particular individual tortures aren’t Scalloped Hammerheads, but we really want to dig deeper on this subject, as Hammerheads are - unfortunately - the target of many sadistic anglers. Due to the wording of the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) doesn’t consider this shark endangered or threatened on the Eastern Seaboard or in the Gulf of Mexico. So fishing for hammerheads in federal waters on the Atlantic coast is perfectly legal, so long as anglers have the proper permit.
To add insult to injury, a lot of you have brought to our attention this video - again, what they’re doing is abhorrent, but is it illegal? NOPE, and honestly, that’s just as disgusting. To be technical, in federal waters, you can’t use a gun to catch a shark but once it’s caught, you can shoot to kill. How perverse is that?
While there are several shark species protected in state waters, most of those are NOT protected in federal waters. So it makes it really easy for these deranged individuals to kill, and ENJOY the torture, of endangered species that have international acknowledgment of their population declines. So, what can be done? That’s the million dollar question, with a billion dollar OBVIOUS answer.
CHANGE. THE. LAWS.
It makes zero sense to have state protection for a MIGRATORY species, and then take that protection away in federal waters, a mere few miles out. Also, since 2012, according to NOAA’s Fisheries of the United States report, recreational anglers have killed more large sharks than commercial fishers have, so the whole “I’m just one person” argument is absolutely invalid, BRO. We need to do better, we need to be better. The sharks are depending on our resourcefulness.
What we’re trying to say is - YES these anglers suck, yes they’re disgusting, yes they’re sick in the head, but what they’re doing is LEGAL, and until the laws change, we can’t do much about their despicable actions.

Sabemos que los tiburones que este individuo en particular tortura no son tiburones martillo, pero realmente queremos profundizar en este tema, ya que los tiburones martillo son, desafortunadamente, el objetivo de muchos pescadores sádicos. Debido a la redacción de la Ley de Especies en Peligro de Extinción (ESA), la Administración Nacional Oceánica y Atmosférica (NOAA) no considera que este tiburón esté en peligro o amenazado en la costa este o en el Golfo de México. Por lo tanto, la pesca de tiburones martillo en aguas federales de la costa atlántica es perfectamente legal, siempre que los pescadores tengan el permiso adecuado.
Para colmo de males, muchos de ustedes nos han llamado la atención sobre otro video; nuevamente, lo que están haciendo es aborrecible, pero ¿es ilegal? NOPE, y honestamente, eso es igual de repugnante. Para ser técnico, en aguas federales, no se puede usar un arma para atrapar un tiburón, pero una vez que se captura, se puede disparar para matar. ¿Qué tan perverso es eso?
Si bien hay varias especies de tiburones protegidas en aguas estatales, la mayoría de ellas NO están protegidas en aguas federales. Por lo tanto, hace que sea realmente fácil para estos individuos trastornados matar y DISFRUTAR de la tortura de especies en peligro de extinción que tienen un reconocimiento internacional de la disminución de su población. ¿Entonces, qué puede hacerse? Esa es la pregunta del millón de dólares, con una respuesta OBVIA de mil millones de dólares.
CAMBIEN. LAS. LEYES.
No tiene sentido tener protección estatal para una especie MIGRATORIA y luego quitar esa protección en aguas federales, a unas pocas millas de distancia. Además, desde 2012, según el informe Pesquerías de los Estados Unidos de la NOAA, los pescadores recreativos han matado más tiburones grandes que los pescadores comerciales, por lo que todo el argumento de que "soy una sola persona" es absolutamente inválido, BRO.
